What Eyelid Surgery Addresses

Eyelid surgery addresses a number of cosmetic concerns in the upper and lower eyelids, including:

  • Excess, sagging skin on the upper eyelids (in some cases the skin hangs so low that it impairs vision
  • Puffy fatty tissue on the upper eyelids
  • Under-eye bags below the lower eyelids
  • Wrinkles and fine lines on the lower eyelids

In order to undergo eyelid surgery, you must be in good general health (e.g., free of serious medical conditions, not smoke). You must also understand the risks of surgery and have realistic expectations from the surgery and results.

Dr. Yessenow will meet with you personally to get a thorough understanding of what your needs and goals are. Based on this, he may recommend combining eyelid surgery with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as brow lift, facelift, chemical peel or laser resurfacing. Or, he may determine that eyelid surgery alone will produce the desired results. Dr. Yessenow will help you navigate all of your options so you can make the best decision.

Eyelid Procedure Details

Dr. Yessenow can perform eyelid surgery using a variety of techniques. He will select his technique based on several factors, including the amount of excess fat and skin present, your eyebrow position, the condition of your eyelid muscles, and your ideal outcome.

During eyelid surgery, inconspicuous incisions are made along the eyelid creases and excess fat, muscle, and skin are trimmed away from the eyelid. The remaining tissue is then lifted and carefully secured in place for a tighter and firmer appearance. Once Dr. Yessenow is finished making the agreed-upon modifications, he will close the incisions with dissolvable sutures.

What to Expect During Recovery

The initial recovery period of eyelid surgery will last one to two weeks, depending on the extent of surgery and your personal healing progress. During this time, you should arrange time off work and your everyday routine to rest with your head elevated as much as possible.

Swelling, soreness and bruising are normal during the first few days of recovery. These side effects will improve over time and any residual symptoms can be covered with makeup. Dr. Yessenow may prescribe oral pain medication to alleviate any discomfort you may feel.

By rejuvenating the eyes, eyelid surgery can have a positive effect on your overall face. Once your eyes look wider, alert and more energetic, you will notice that your entire face opens up. And because the scars from the procedure will be small and hidden in the natural creases of the eyelids, there will be little, if any, telltale signs of surgery!
